Attraction type: Astronomy Complex

Located at Tanjung Bidara Masjid Tanah, the Al-Khawarizmi Astronomy Complex is a facility provided by the State government in Meleka to revive the study of Astronomy.  The complex is named after the great Arabic astronomer Abdullah Muhammad ibn Musa, who is also known as Al-Khawarizmi.  The complex was built at a cost of RM 20 million and is equipped with an observatory, a planetarium, an astronomy training center, as well as a robotic observatory.  The training center was completed in 2007.

The Al-Khawarizmi Astronomy Complex provides the people of Malacca, and Malaysia for that matter, a rare opportunity to appreciate and study the science of astronomy at a much deeper level.  The state government believes that the younger generations have the ability to revive the glory of the science of astronomy in today’s world.

Tips for Travelers

The complex is situated in Kampung Balik Batu and along the Melaka Strait.  It is a preferred visitors choice for people who choose to spend time with their families, especially on weekends, and during the school holidays.  The beach is also the preferred choice for family day events, as evident from the hive of activities that always seem to take place there.

The Astronomy Day Celebration at the Al-Khawarizmi Astronomy Complex is held during the months of April and May every year, and it is particularly popular among the main activities of the complex that attracts students and tourists alike.

A number of drills take place in the area, like the Aquatic training exercises conducted by the Civil Defense Department (JPA3) and the Fire and Rescue Services Department.  But there are plenty of other added attractions for the common beach-goers.  So this complex is not the sole attraction of the place; therefore, you can come here with the purpose of visiting the beach or you can visit the beach when you came to see the complex!

Please note that the place is managed by Muslim scholars, so wear modest Eastern clothes.  Strictly avoid tube shirts, short pants and mini skirts.

How should visitors get to the Al-Khawarizmi Astronomy Complex?

Take the Simpang Ampat Interchange from the North South Expressway (PLUS), and go towards the Masjid Tanah town.  There you’ll see the signboard to Tanjung Bidara and a little further on, the signage of ‘Kompleks Falak Al-Khawarizmi’ will be visible.
